Club Spotlight - Dr. Neil Christopher, '55![]() Dr. Neil Christopher (right)
Dr. Neil Christopher graduated with honors from Auburn in 1955 and received his medical degree at the UAB School of Medicine in 1958. A U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War and a Bronze Star, he is a retired family physician in Guntersville. "Medicine runs deep in my family," Dr. Christopher says. "My grandfather was a rural family doctor in Choctaw County, my brother is a family doctor in Guin and both of my sons are doctors. Being from a rural community, I always knew I would go into rural medicine." Dr. Christopher served on the Auburn Alumni Association board of directors from 2004 to 2008, played (and still plays) an integral part in the establishment of the Marshall County Auburn Club, and two years ago was inducted into the Alabama Health Care Hall of Fame. Dr. Christopher is also a 2011 recipient of the Auburn Alumni Association's Lifetime Achievement Award. The Lifetime Achievement award is a great honor that recognizes recipients for outstanding achievements in their professional lives, personal integrity and stature, and service to the university. It was established in 2001 to honor extraordinary accomplishments by members of the Auburn family. Recipients of Lifetime Achievement Awards are selected by a committee of Auburn administrators, trustees, faculty and alumni. Needless to say, Marshall County is proud to claim Dr. Christopher as one of its own!

Club Spotlight - Herman McElrath

Herman McElrath
The Auburn University Agricultural Alumni Association honored Marshall County resident and philanthropist, Herman McElrath by inducting him into the prestigious Hall of Honor at their annual banquet held at The Hotel at Auburn University and Dixon Conference Center.
The Hall of Honor recognizes living Alabamians who have made significant contributions to agriculture in the state. Each year, in conjunction with the association's annual meeting, a banquet is held for Hall of Honor recipients and their families. Biographical plaques of the recipients are placed on the first-floor walls of Comer Hall on the Auburn University campus. The inaugural induction ceremony was held in 1984 and consisted of three members. In later years, the selection process evolved to identify individuals from three primary sectors of the industry -- agribusiness, production and education/government. Herman McElrath of Guntersville was the 2012 honoree in the agribusiness sector. McElrath was one of the early leaders in establishing Alabama's poultry and egg industry, first as co-owner and later as general manager of a highly successful commercial egg operation, and has served as a leader in the Alabama Poultry and Egg Association. He was elected to the board of directors for the Auburn University Agricultural Alumni Association in 1994 and 1995.
The McElraths are no strangers to Auburn University or the College of Agriculture. Wayne McElrath, Herman’s older brother, was inducted into the Hall of Honor in 1989. Herman and wife Linda have three children, two of which graduated from Auburn University. “At one point, we had grandchildren, nieces and nephews all there at the same time,” said McElrath of his ties to Auburn. “The induction came as a surprise since I’ve been out of the agriculture business for a while and it is certainly a privilege to be included in the Hall of Honor.”
